Count Dracula (/ˈdrækjʊlə, -jə-/) is the title character of Bram Stoker's 1897 gothic horror novel Dracula. He is considered the prototypical and archetypal vampire in subsequent works of fiction. Aspects of the character are believed by some to have been inspired by the 15th-century Wallachian prince Vlad the Impaler, who was also known as Vlad Dracula, and by Sir Henry Irving, an actor for whom Stoker was a personal assistant.[12]

Vlad Tepes, also known as Vlad the Impaler, was a 15th-century Wallachian prince infamous for his cruelty and brutal methods of punishment. He was known for impaling his enemies on spikes, leaving their bodies on display as a warning to others. Bram Stoker drew inspiration from Vlad's reputation as a tyrant and incorporated some of his qualities into the character of Count Dracula. Although Vlad's reign was marked with violence, he is celebrated as a hero in Romanian folklore for his defiance against Ottoman rule.
